11 speed shimano cassette on 10 speed wheels

I've got some 10 speed Dura Ace 7800 wheels that I'd like to fit on a new Trek Domane SLR with 11 speed STIs. I've done a bit of reading around re. fixes. Some suggest filing down the edges from the freehub (See Leonard Zinn below). Others recommend filing down the back of the cassette. Neither option appeals...

I'm not fussed about having 11 speeds on the cassette, and am happy for my top sprocket to be 12 tooth (that's currently what I've got...), so I'm wondering if its possible to use the 11 speed cassette without the 11 tooth sprocket, screwing the locknut directly onto the 12 cog, with a spacer against the freehub flanges to bring the cassette up to the right width. Has anyone tried this? The second cog (12) doesn't have serrations, but if thats' a problem, I wonder if it's possible to use a 10 speed 12 tooth outer sprocket instead, which would have the serrations.

I've read quite a few posts complaining about the lack of compatibility. Is this a solution?

The fixes I've seen so far are below...

Yes, you can just remove the 11t and use only 10 sprockets.

You can also buy 11s cassettes designed to fit 10s wheels, although they are expensive.

A few months ago I fitted a friend's 11 speed Ultegra cassette to a set of 10 speed Supra carbon wheels just to see if it would work. Didn't adjust mechs or anything.

Worked perfectly and he went on to do a half ironman on them with no issues.

I'd suggest trying the cassette first then the above.

Thanks Matthew. I'll do as you say! I've heard that quite a few 10 speed wheels can take the 11 speed cassette - eg all Mavics - but reports are that the Shimano freehub body is too short.

Who said that no good comes from Evil? I'll give that a try, thanks.

No probs - pleasure to help anytime.

I'm about to try an 11 speed 105 cassette on some 10 speed Planet X wheels so will revert back.

Fingers crossed that yours works ok.

    Ciao

As an addendum to this - 11 speed 105 cassettes fit fine on 10 speed Planet X hubs - have just done it now and left greasy cassette marks from the old cassette on the 3 day old kitchen table.

    Hope that helps.

  • I've got an EDCO 10Eleven cassette in the draw at home, 11-29t. Used it for ironman last year. PM me if you're interested.

Alternatively there are some guys that have 1.8mm machined off the largest sprocket in order to fit a 10sp freehub. Woolie over on Time Trialling forum does it for £30

She's in bed. I'm in the kitchen trying to get greasy marks off the 3 day old oak kitchen table without destroying it.

    That'll be a no then ............
