Dug out my old Trek 1400 circa 2002/03 i think but upgraded a few years ago with 105/ultegra mix 10 speed and FSA SLK Chain ring/crank arms and Shimano WH R 560 rims , but still in great nick. Though fork currently needs re fitting and is the old 1 inch size. Needs bearings and headset cap and bolt. Guessing it would be 1 inch bearings but would any headset cap and bolt fit. Fork still has star nut in place.

Headset cap size depends on what stem you fit i.e. 1" ahead or 1.125" with sleeve
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

The current 1" fork steerer has a sleeve which goes over the top section of the it. So I guess making it up to 1 1/8 ??
  • 2002 vintage and later Trek 1400 has a 1 1/8" threadless fork steerer. Earlier 1400s had a 1" threaded steerer which you could adapt to take a 1" threadless fork so maybe yours is pre-2001. Is it a Trek fork?
To sit right, top cap should match the steerer diameter.

Added image to original post. A more detailed look its a AHEAD SET SE-2K. Its the original fork, when my other bike broke I tried to get the carbon fork on this put in the Trek but was told then the trek was a 1" steerer and the carbon was the 1 1/8
Maybe just needs a good service and needs a new head cap and bolt.
  • That colour scheme is a 2001 USPS version. I had thought they went straight from a threaded steerer to the 1 1/8" threadless carbon fork on the 2002 bike but it seems 2001 was a transition year. Happy to learn something new.

An ideal headset would be Cane Creek S2 which you can easily find on eBay.
