Does anyone know the steerer size or if tapered etc on the original Fox 36 Talas forks it came with? It's been returned without them after theft.

You should be able to see if the headtube is tapered.

But in 2009 I doubt it.

Measure the headtube and add a bit for the stack height of your preferred headset, and a tiny bit more for a spacer or two.
