Wheels with Disc Brakes - Interchangeability
Newbie, first post, and possibly a high probability of offending purists.
Not a bad way to start!
I am a triathlete (boo, hiss) who is about to purchase an Open Cycle UP which uses disc brakes. It occurs to me that my next tri-bike will probably have disc brakes too, and so I am aiming at compatability between the frames - the UP (which can take 700 wheels) and my not-yet-purchased tri-bike. My hope is that, on days when I want to go on the road or ride with a group, I can swap the UP on to road wheels, rather than putting up with the ribbing I get if I take a tri-bike along on a group ride.
To achieve this goal, I need compatability of size, mounting style (thru axle on the UP) and cassette, and herein lies the problem. I tend to use SRAM gear for my off-road bikes, and Shimano for my road bikes/tri-bikes. I want to know whether I could take a 700 wheel with disc brakes and a Shimano cassette and put it on the UP (which is likely to have a Force 1 RD).
As I understand it, there are three factors that may affect compatibility:
- axle length and style (thru axle)
- cassette (SRAM Force 1 RD operating Shimano cassette - ought to be OK)
- (possibly) hub/disc brake fitting.
The SRAM Force 1 uses an XD hub, and I am worried that this might affect the disc/caliper alignment and therefore make it impossible to install my road wheels (also with disc brakes) on the UP.
Can anyone shed light on this? Apologies in advance if this is a stupid question...put it down to me being a newbie, and a triathlete!

My first reaction would be - why not call Open directly and ask them the questions you pose. Not sure how many people on here will have direct experience of the Open UP to be able to answer your questions accurately.
Just had a quick look at the Open UP on their website.

One issue that might cause problems is that they have redesign the derailleur hanger set up so that it is secured inside the rear chainstay by the thru axle of the wheelset. I'd imagine that could present issues if you wanted to swap wheels between bikes but maybe not.
By the way - welcome to the forum. Hope my slightly negative response has not put you off0 -
Thanks for responding. I will get in touch with Open Cycle.0

They seem to be very responsive on the comments section at the bottom of their website. Loads of technical questions there, I suspect you'll get a decent answer.2015 Canyon Nerve AL 6.0 (son #1's)
