"new" ideas

So many "new" things in cycling...but are they actually new?
Recent example: direct-mount brakes. Not new: back in the 70s and 80s, you could get direct mount Mafac centre-pull brakes on your custom built bike.
"Pro compact": a 52/36 or similar was common in the 80s in "sports" bikes, although road bikes had 52/42 (and 13-21 or similar at the back!)
Anyone got any other examples of new reinventing of old ideas?
