Have taken delivery of N+1 but am thinking of converting from 11-28 to 11-32. Recognise I'll need a long-cage rear (current is Shimano 105) but will I need to change the chain? Front is 50/34

It's just a hill. Get over it.

You may need to add 2 links, page 9 of the Shimano DM-RD0003-08-ENG.pdf shows the procedure for determining chain length. http://si.shimano.com/#seriesList/18

Agreed, the number of teeth wrapped increases from 14 to 16, so one pair of links should do it.

Shimano don't give capacities for the latest 5800 105's, but for the older 5700 the max capacity for short cage was 34t and your proposed setup is 37t.
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.
  • I'd make sure to check the current chain length first. Sometimes new bikes come with a chain length that is too long so you may not need to change it at all.
