Looking to upgrade

Hi everyone
First post for me.
Just got into road cycling at the ripe old age of 58, managed to do LTB ok.
Currently riding a Carrera but now looking to upgrade. I find this a bit of a minefield so many manufacturers frames, group sets and brakes.
So at last to my question. I am down to a cannondale synapse 2015 ( new bike ) 105 brakes and groupset Carbon frame. Reduced to £1350.
Vs giant contend 1 ally frame, disc brakes and 105 groupset. 2017. Also new.
What are you're views on either bike. Carbon vs ally ?? Disc or not.
Do not commute just leisure rides, maybe some sportive in the future.
