Has the long sleeve gabba been discontinued? Or
is it under a new name ?
A well known online site hasn't got them anymore and only has the short sleeve?
Also what's the point In a water proof jersey that's short sleeved??? Am I missing something?
When i die I just hope the wife doesn't sell my stuff for what I told her I paid for it other wise someone will be getting a mega deal!!!

The long sleeve Gabba has been redesigned - better fit and improved drop tail- it's also called the Perfetto now. You can get a short sleeve, a long sleeve and a convertible sleeve Perfetto. The only Gabba in this seasons range is the short sleeve one.

It's nothing like waterproof- it's windproof and has some water resistance.

I think the idea is that you can wear it with Nanoflex arm warmers or similar.

^ This! It's far from waterproof! Outperformed by a sportful fiandre extreme in every respect.

I think there's a general misnomer on these types of jerseys now. Castelli don't claim that the gabba is waterproof, it would defeat the point of the jersey. True waterproofness (material, taped seams, etc) comes at the expense of breathability.

The aim of these jerseys was to keep the worse of the weather off you for intensity rides in bad weather. Being completely waterproof at intentsity isn't really required as you're going to be sweating. I.e you aren't going to stay perfectly dry riding hard, irrespective. The aim of the gabba jersey (and it's ilk) is to provide better protection than a normal jersey when it's cold, wet or windy. IMHO I think it does that quite well though there are better options out there now (e.g. Stolen goat, Mossa to name two others I own)

If you want to stay truly dry then a rain coat is always a better option. But you will sweat more as the intensity lifts as you are trading waterproofing for breathability. Horse for courses....

They are not for the same job. Would you race in the Sportful at 8-12 degrees C?

The Gabba is good for racing - but the majority of people would be better off with a more protective top. I wore my Gabba in August in Yorkshire and it lashed it down. It wasn't enough. Its probably fine if you're racing flat out and you are creating a lot of heat - but not for training rides for me.

Gabba + varied base layers and sometimes nanoflex armwarmers underneath right through the winter in Aberdeenshire last season. Probably 3 months of riding twice a week in -5 to +5 degree weather.

If its biblical, a squadra jacket over the top.

A Gabba is a basic human right.

PS... Fiandre doesn't fit me in any size, so haven't tried it.

In what way are they not for the same job? Very similar in my opinion and they are used by tinkof for racing in those conditions.

  • The Gabba isn't waterproof, but does a good job at pretending to be. The Sportful is waterproof and claimed to be so. The Fiandre is also taped so that claim does hold water, as it were.

In relation to doing a job then there's always an over generalisation with these sorts of pieces. The Fiandre may, (may) be a little too warm for racing.

But then, let's be honest, few of us are really racing with this stuff, we buy it for comfort. So, in that respect the Fiandre looks to be a much better all round option along with the Parentini Mossa.

Where the Gabba does seem good is protection vs weight. It's very light compared to other tops I have that are windproof. But its ability to keep water out has been dramatically oversold - especially on here.

Yep. It's very light. And actually very good at stuff which it rarely gets mentioned for. I used mine on the MTB, great for that. I've used it for CX on some cold days, a nice balance. It's often great for commuting. As you say, it's oversold, I've no idea why that is, where it comes from, it's one of the great urban myths and I've always been clear that Castelli should not be blamed for something they never claimed.

In showery weather when it's not warm, I like it. And when it's just not warm. Wore the long sleeve version yesterday with no base layer and it was spot on at about 8 degrees. But I don't go out for a long ride when it's cold and wet.
