Right, looking to give this CX thing a bash and have a load of parts sat in my garage;

Merlin Malt 4 MTB 26er frame (Kinesis racelight OEM)
a pair of 105 road wheels
a pair of XT rims on 317's
some 9 speed XT cranks
road carbon fork - no disc mounts

I'm aware in short shifters,brakes etc but can any of the above be cobbled together to give me a good base?

    Will CX tyres fit into the road fork?

    What brakes on the frame, if you have V/canti bosses the they will be in the wrong place for 700c wheels.

    iirc - road and mtb rear stay/rear hub spacings are different

    They are, typically 130mm for road and older MTB, 135mm for any vaguely modern MTB and many (bit not all) road disc braked.

  • I've cobbled some stuff together this morning, I knew where issues would lie but tried it anyway ;)

    As I expected road wheels don't fit dropouts so MTB it is - I'm fine with this they're decent wheels. Next thing was road fork no good due to the fact wheels are disc only, so looks like I need a 26inch rigid fork with disc bosses. Other than this issue my XT cranks have a 42 tooth, combined with an appropriately ratio' road cassette do you think this will give me a good spread?

    Chuck on some narrow nobly tyres and bobs yer uncle? Oh also road shifters and mech disc brakes.....

    Road brake levers need road pull disc brake callipers, not common but can be found.

    A 42t should be fine, maybe consider getting a 44 or 48, both available in 104/4 bolt fitment.
