I'm in the market fur my first decent mtb and have come across a deal .
But the bike has the new ( new to me ) one sprocket up front ..
Bike is the boardman pro and will come in about £740 with some dealing :-)
As a first bike , would the gearing be ok ?
I ride road bikes off and on so legs should be up to strength again fairly quickly .
Thanks in advance

Assuming it's the one on the Halfords site, should be 32t to 10-42 cassette.
That should cover most stuff, single rings do loose a bit of range vs doubles or triples but big cassettes help matters.
With out knowing the sort of riding impossible to know if that might be a issue.0 -
you'll be fine with 1x11 just do it.http://www.thecycleclinic.co.uk -wheel building and other stuff.0

I've ridden three years on 1x9 (32t and an 11-34) with only the occasional issue on longer rides with longer steeper hills putting me outside the comfort zone when climbing, so just swapped to 1x10 with a 34t and 11-40 cassette, a 32t and 11-42t should be fine.Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0

1 x11 generally gives a lesser range of gears which means losing either top end speed or climbing gears. It really depends where you ride and your fitness if this will be a problem. I use 2 x10, 24/38 with an 11-36 cassette to give a wide range of gears as it suits me and where i ride which can have long steep hills.0

Due to just starting if I'm honest I really don't know what type of riding I will end up doing .
Just know I want to ride ;-)

I've had a 1x10 MTB and currently have a 1x11 Giant XTC, I've not struggled up anything although on the road i do spin out but that's the trade off you make!
So much easier to maintain and clean etc!0
