Hello all -

I am trying to replace a worn out 10sp Campagnolo cassette on a bike I'm fixing up.

The old cassette is I think a Mirage era cassette and the width is a touch over 38mm. The bike is running a Veloce derailleur and Mirage 10sp shifter. I think it is all early-mid 2000s vintage. It all works pretty well -except the old cassette is worn out.
It has a proton wheelset.

Campagnolo say that the cassette size is 40mm.

I tried a Miche Primato 10 sp Campagnolo compatible cassette for size, and nope, it doesn't fit - there just is not enough splines on the freehub for the smallest cog to engage.

The freehub on the bike has 38mm of clearance for a cassette to fit - I can't see any model number on the freehub.

Could anyone recommend a course of action? Will I need to get a more modern free-hub to fit the proton wheelset so I can fit a new cassette on to it?

I've thought of ditching the Campagnolo freehub and going for a shimano compatible freehub - but there still is the problem of getting a freehub that fits the Proton wheel set.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Davy

You might have a very old 9 speed freehub which measures 35 mm , the later ones are 36 mm and suitable for 9 -11 speed.
  • Thanks for the reply.
    Measuring the freehub I'd say it's 35.5mm!!

Measuring the old campag 10sp cassette and the new niche side by side there is 2mm difference, the old campy being 2mm smaller.

    Thanks again.

Your wheel is old exa drive 9 speed then. It was only about for a few years. Miche again make cassettes that fit. It will be the miche bianchi cassette if I am right.

  • ...so, it's a nine speed exa drive freehub, which someone has crammed a 10sp cassette onto by - it seems- mixing and matching spacers and sprockets.
    Blimey!
Given I've 10 speed mirage shifters on the bike I'm loathed to down-speed to 9, and buy replacement shifters if I can swap in a 10 speed freehub nidy to fit the proton wheel set? I stirpped the wheel/hub
down but there are no markings.

    Thanks to you all again!

a photo will tell us what freehub you have. My guess was my best guess it may not be a right guess.

  • Hello,

An image here - although phone camera resolution a bit rubbish at this size:

The axle diameter is 17mm. Remeasuring the free hub body today in the daylight, I reckon it's 35mm

    Thanks in advance.
