Replacement cassette
Hi All,
I was wondering if you could help me out, I've got a Whyte Kings Cross (2012 edition) and the original spec had a SRAM PG 950 11-32t however last winter my local bike shop changed it to a Shimano HG 50-9 12-27t... most probably because this is what they had in stock rather than actually asking if this is what I needed. The time has come to change out the cassette again but I'm unsure whether I should go back to the original 11-32t or replace it with the 12-27t? Is the foot print of them the same? Since the bike shop changed it out I've had difficulty removing the back wheel (cassette clashing with the derailleur) and wondering if this is because the Shimano HG 50-9 12-27t is slightly wider than the SRAM PG 950?
Just so you are aware, I use the bike for daily commuting (along cycle ways & the odd hill) and weekend cycling with a mixed gradient. On a long steep hill I don't find the 12-27t causes to much of an issue.
The price of the replacement cassette between SRAM PG 950 & Shimano HG 50-9 is within a couple pounds of each other.
The bike runs 9 speed cassette.
Thanks for your help.
Russell

If you don't need the extra gears stick with the smaller cassette as it will be lighter (for the same spec) and put the gears closer together (which is nice).
Always select top gear when removing the wheel (smallest sprocket) to make it easier to get past the rear mech, there will be little difference between 12 and 11t.Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0 -
Changing the cassette so soon - you must get through a lot of miles and/or ride mucky roads.....FFS! Harden up and grow a pair0
