I'm fitting a 34f Race face nw chainring on my Anthem . My XT rear mech has had little use but doesn't have a clutch so thinking of a small guide to add a bit of security .

Has anyone had any experience with a guide like pic above ? Just looks a bit flimsy , I have a press fit Bb and no direct mount so limiting my choices a bit . Cheers

I wouldn't bother with a guide, been running an NW with no damper on the mech for a fair while and never lost a chain.
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.
  • I have run nw rings on 2 bikes before without clutch mechs they they were manly used on road and flatfish single track .

To clarify this is on my Niota (link in sig).

My commuter is also on a NW but that's not a fair comparison.

I've run narrow wide without a clutch and not dropped a chain. The clutch keeps things under control a bit better and stops the chain slapping against the frame.
  • Will see how it goes , I used a Race face ring before and was very good , just seems a lot of " you need a clutch mech or it will fail" posts on the net
