Di2 Front Mech Noise as a Ringtone

OK, a bit cheesy, but I prefer it to the boring old 'ding'. And on a busy train, it helps you to identify the fellow cyclists who look around for the bike...! I've set it for texts and emails (not ringtone).

Took me ages to get it onto my phone/computer/phone then into Dropbox, but I guess I'm getting too old for tech these days....thought it would have been quite simple.

Anyway, if anyone wants it, and not waste 30 minutes making it, it's in my Dropbox.

Eh?! I mean if anyone wants to use it (the .m4r file) i can give them access to it.

I think that means it's in the Cloud....? Which cloud, where and how fluffy, I have no idea.
  • I'll be the first to want it  - I must get out more. Thanks

I'd like to try it - i have no idea how a Di2 front mech sounds any different to any other front mech, but I like the unique idea! Is it noticeable enough to work as a ring tone though - surely as lovely as a well oiled mech / chain sounds, I can't see it having the "percussive" or "piercing" nature of most ring tones.

What is a drop box and how do I get it?

Or can you just iMessage or email it to me?
  • Just pm me and I'll send out an invite. If any young tech whizz knows a better way of doing it I'm all ears.

I see this more as a text or email tone, not a ringtone.

And a DA9000 front mech (or any other mechanical!) sounds like.....silence...!

    Not young but....

Just put it in the /public/ folder of your dropbox and [from the Dropbox website] click on the 'share' button. That will give you a link to paste here .
  • Nothing, file empty, send it as an attachment, you have the email.

    Try now.
  • The dropbox link is now working, I've downloaded it. I need an MP3 file for my phone, so I've converted it and put it on the phone. However, its a bit short and easily missed, maybe it needs to loop for 30 seconds. Good effort though.
  • Thanks BTB, works a treat

Just a heads up for non-iphone users. The file is a .m4r file which needs converting to an mp3 to play on non-iphone devices. You need to download a software converter in order to do this...

LOL! And I already had plenty of grief converting it from a mp4, or m4a or something to the m4r, backwards and forwards between Macbook and Iphone.

You'd think that with IOS 10.whatever, and the new super duper Iphone 7 they'd have made a button that says 'Convert sound you just recorded to ringtone?' But no!
  • Got it thanks, I even managed the mp4 to mp3 converter.

That probably works better in London than Yorkshire. I'm not familiar with the sound of a Di2 front mech and I don't know any cyclists up here who use Di2 so they probably wouldn't be either!

You also need electricity to charge it.

Oh, we can generate electricity quite easily with our steam and water powered mills.

Maybe the sound of gears skipping or chain drop would be more widely recognised :-)

As a sound it's pretty neat, as a ringtone less so. I had a play about with it this morning in Audacity; chopped off the extraneous silence, copied & pasted what was left so that it repeats in the style of a phone ringing [brrrrr-brr, brrrrr-brr] and then selected Amplify from the effects menu to make it louder. The end result was still pretty poor as a ringtone, but there's scope for a bit of playing about with it if anyone fancies a play. I binned mine, before you ask.

Agreed, fine as a text alert though, which I believe is what Berni suggested was the best use, despite the thread title.

Bizarrely my rear di2 derailleur makes a loud bang when shifting down the cassette (from a big sprocket onto a smaller sprocket) It's like is shifting with too much force. Shifting the other way, it's silent.
Is the rear derailleur set up incorrectly and needs adjustment, the B-screw ? Thanks.

I can see why you choose the front derailleur noise, on my old Ultegra di2 it's a very distinctive robotic actuator noise. Now I've got used to it and hardly notice.
