Shoe buying advice

Hi everyone,
Recently got back into the sport and bought myself a guardrail and it came with flat pedals, I used to use crank brothers and thought I'd give flats a try.
But not sure what shoes might be a good place to start?
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance
Phil

What's your budget?
You are basically looking for something with a stiff sole, so you can get the power down - and something with a waffle grip so that they can stick to the pedals better.
A cheap skateboarding shoe (like a DC) will work.
Personally, I swear by Shimano AM41s. Light(ish), stiff sole and a protective flap over the laces to keep the mud and water out. Sole isn't as 'sticky' as something like a Five Ten, but I prefer it as I like to re-position my foot on my pedals quite a lot. Winter is drawing in too - they are warm for a shoe that isn't designed as something 'winter specific'.
Can get them for around £50 now (Think there is a newer version coming out soon)
The main alternative is something like a Five Ten. I've had a pair, but found that the older model that I had sucked in water (and were quite pricey).2007 Felt Q720 (the ratbike)
