Buying or Refurb

Hello all,
I have been contemplating buying a mountain bike for months, now I'm looking at between £400-600 as I want it for trails and the odd bit of road cycling to work when I move closer. Now I have a mountain bike at home; the giant XTC SE from either 2005/2006 which I would happily pump a bit of money into, however I'm just not sure if it'll be a waste, and become a money hole, It has been heavily used. Furthermore, if I buy a hardtail that's reasonably new will I notice the difference in biking technology from my old bike and the 10 year old newer bike?
Cheers
