Odd shifters?

I'm looking to upgrade my rear end to a new derailleur and casette. I like the idea of a clutch type mechanism to keep the chain in tension but these seem only to be available in a 10 speed.
Currently my bike is an 8 speed. Is some kind of frankenbike possible on a budget, to upgrade my rear cassette and derailleur and the shifter to match but leave the front end and it's shifter alone?

You may have to change the front mech, the 10 speed cage is narrower for the narrower chain and sometimes you can't get the shifting consistent, had that issue on my sons bike, the sweet spot for decent shifting was so narrow a change in temperature meant we had to reindex it (it seemed).
Just to be a pedant, the damper (clutch damper in a Shimano) means LESS consistent tension as the damper adds tension when needed, however it's better chain control.Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0
