So this is the first bike ive owned without a QR skewer. Its a bolt through axle that can only be opened with a 4mm hex.

I cant find the name of this type of axle anywhere, and the cube website doesn't give much away. Has anyone any experience with these?

  • I think they are called thru axles.

There must be plenty of info on mountain bike sites, it's technology that has leaked over from MTB's with the disc brakes. They stop the power of the disc brakes popping the wheel out of the fork under heavy load, which is a good think in my opinion.

My MTB has a thru axle on the front but it has a lever similar to a QR lever, you flip it over and engage it in the cut out then use the lever to unscrew it.
A 4mm hex sounds small for an axle. Whilst it would not be done up very tight with time and muck off the road it could stick in their pretty tight. Was there no booklet with the bike explaining it?

    From Cube website

    "X12 Through Axle
In this system, a cone is used to form a play-free connection. It is only necessary to tighten the axle from one side. The position of the wheel is done by an insert in the right-hand dropout which is secured by a bolt. The main advantages of the Syntace system are quick and simple changing of the wheel, reliable position of the brake disc and higher stiffness of the rear of the bike. This allows the assembly to be made lighter than a conventional through-axle."

Also, it should be a 5mm hex.
