New <£600 MTB - does size matter?!

I am sure this could prompt a number of "search the forum" responses, but with a view to sparking another debate, I was looking for some MTB buying advice.
I have to do a charity challenge later this year, across the South Downs so need an MTB. I was planning to buy something quite cheap just for this, although possibly to carry on in the winter when my road bikes go into hibernation. I am a roadie so am quite slight and light. I am wondering if there was a quick answer as to whether I should get a 26 / 27.5 / 29 or in reality will it make no difference given my ability and intentions? Was looking at the voodoo bizango given the strong reviews but then here on Bikeradar they said the DB Heist was worth a look, both have different wheel sizes so wasn't sure what to do. Clearly I won't be doing to really test the bike going over / through the South Downs, so I am guessing it makes zero difference, but wanted to canvass brief opinion!
Thanks

No - size doesn't matter. Comfort (and possibly weight) are the most important if you are doing distance over the South Downs. (I'm assuming that the charity ride is a marathon ride, rather than technical trails.)
Personally I would be looking at something with bigger wheels, but that is personal preference - I do a lot of long rides across fields and trails - I'm too old and my knees are too shot to be a downhill speed merchant.
Assume that you have seen the reviews of best bikes under £500 on the site:

I like the look of the Canyon, but mail-order may not be an option for you.2007 Felt Q720 (the ratbike)
2012 Cube Ltd SL (the hardtail XC 26er)
2014 Lapierre Zesty TR 329 (the full-sus 29er)0 -
I think for what you are doing wheel size won't matter. The Bizango would seem to be a great choice.0

I'd go with the Bizango for that usage, the Heist is a decent bike on paper and the (last weeks) review is good, but the larger wheels will slightly better suited for what you propose.
Another option to consider

Or

Both are more XC biased (especially the Rafal) which would suite the South Downs.Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0
