Carbon Crack

I just purchased a 2nd hand Speedmax frame, following much excitement of un-boxing and assembling there appears to be a crack in the frame running up from the BB.

Do you think this is superficial or does it look more serious? Hopefully I am panicking unnecessarily.

That looks like a crack to me, I'm afraid to say. Does the material flex, if you apply thumb pressure?

  • It's pretty stiff down by the BB anyway so no movement when I squeeze the sides.

As Ben6899 said it also looks like a crack to me, a bit too open to be just cosmetic. I would return it to the seller for a refund if possible or if you decide to keep it at least get it checked out.

even a damaged cf tube can be extremely stiff, fingers can't apply much force, the loads you put on it when riding will be far higher

it does look like a crack

there's also a small gouge visible near the bottom of the crack, maybe a sign that it's had an impact in the area

one simple test is to try tapping the area/other areas with something hard (but low mass!), coin, bolt, etc., see if the sound changes in the immediate area

tbh, i'd want to return for refund as you can't be sure what led to the damage, or as above, if you can't do that then consider contacting a cf repair specialist

Yeah. Doesn't look good to me. Was the packaging damaged? Or like that when seller sent it.

FFS what a nightmare. For a second I would of bet money on it being the carbon lay up but then I opened the pictures.
I bloody hope whoever sold it to you didnt know it was there and that it was damaged in transit!
Strange place for that to happen so I bet he knowingly sold you a dud.

No way I would be riding that! Sorry but looks like the seller has been a bit of a git - hope you can get it sorted and they arent difficult with you.
  • Wouldn`t ride that, sorry.

Hope you get that sorted out with the seller, or the courier.
Trek,,,, too cool for school ,, apparently
  • Yes as above that looks in need of carbon repair or the skip.
