yep, patti smith's gloria is by far the best

though the lyrics are so different i think it's fair to name another best using the original lyrics

eddie and the hot rods did the best gloria with original lyrics for their 1976 'live at the marquee' ep (with 96 tears, get out of denver, and satisfaction), it was also on the teenage depression album

i just dug out the ep, now over 40 years old ffs, this is why vinyl is best, and i still vividly remember that...

the a side says "play real loud", and the b side says "play even louder"

a little known fact is that this ep was subsequently performed live as part of the cut's set, right down to repeating barrie masters' "can't have chairs in the audience" chit chat before gloria, the cut subsequently evolved into spandau ballet

if you lack the vinyl, someone has stuck it on youtube, gloria starts at about 7:10...

I saw Eddie and the Hotrods 2 years ago in Whitby supporting Big Country. They were pretty good to say that the lead singer looked liked he'd been on stimulants for the last 40 years.
