I was looking with interest at the development of Tiagra hydraulic shifters/brakes as a possiblity to upgrade without going 11 speed.
Just had a look at Madison price for STI levers + brakes = 449 pounds

RRP of the 105 version is £ 399... am I missing something?

  • 10spd is now possibly considered Retro, hence more expensive. You'll need Shrek hands for the hoods.

Not really... Tiagra is 10 speed... and should cost less than 105... I think somewhere there is an error, hopefully in Madison RRP, which is just ridiculous

  • I'd expect the real world price to be lower but it's still odd

Indeed, but I am comparing like for like... even 105 can be bought for less than 399...

    I just don't get it

  • Are you going full shimano or still a hybrid? if hybrid watch out for the pull ratio which won't be compatible with the earlier 10 speed shimano stuff (or campag).

Of course Tiagra will be cheaper than 105.

Levers and brakes are £50 cheaper according to Madison:

    105 is £499.99

Give nthe price I am not going anywhere, but the idea was full hydro.

Ah, OK... Ribble quotes RRP for 105 as 399... it's probably the big post Brexit price jump in Shimano stuff and Ribble is still on the old price.

Still... 50 quid difference, or let's say 10% is hardly worth getting excited about... I was hoping for a lot less, something like 250-300 RRP, which then becomes 200 with the offers...

    Nevermind

Just wait till the likes of Wiggle (and CRC), Ribble and Merlin start selling them and see where the actual selling price ends up. They ought to be cheaper than the 105 equivalents.

I'd have thought they would be a popular item with the touring crowd. Tiagra 10 speed triple with hydraulic discs sounds like a proper workhorse...
  • They aren't triple though. I wish they would do a 10 speed triple version. Buying a complete bike looks cheaper these days! Those Tiagra / 105 hoods look soooo bad it must be worth paying the extra for the Ultegra level one.

I think next years Tour De Fer is interesting:
    http://www.genesisbikes.co.uk/bikes/adv ... -de-fer-20

Triple allows fast club rides but also pannier touring / child pulling.
Mudguards and dynamo for commute / tour use
    10 speed is fine

    Changes I'd make:
    Carbon fork
    possibly titanium or alloy frame
    Hydraulic braking
    Remove front rack.

Basically I want a Ti croix with triple gears and the accessories!

Once the new Shimano prices kick in (looks like all retailers are still on the old ones), It will end up being 350 quid at best, which is way more than I would like to spend

Think they missed a trick there then :(
  • I'm not convinced that hydro, as a replacement, is every going to be significantly cheaper. Certainly not post Brexit anyway. By now, with Tiagra, 105, Ultegra, DA, non series, SRAM etc it should be the case that a pair should be getting down to under £300 or £250 regularly. But they don't. And I don't think it will happen while prices of some pairs of shifters remain high.

Well, then they stick their shifters up their xxxx and I'll stick to my hybrid systems, as I paid them already

  • think how shops feel when we see wiggle selling shimano stuff cheaper than current trade.

I agree the tektro disc calipers are good enough. I am not changing either.

What is the best cable discs at the moment? After a couple of brown trouser moments in the Lakes I'm weary of using my disc equipped bike other than commuting. (currently using bb7's).

Although there is no evidence of them being any good for long and steep road descents. I don't want to be the first to find out, to be honest... prefer to stick to my somewhat chunky and ugly HyRD
