I'm staying near Play del Ingles

Or as it is generally referred to, the gay friendly capital of Europe.

  • Strava is now public for the time being, I didn't realise it was private, but I'll probably change it back at some point.

Those look like good routes, definitely more organised than us! The last one of yours was my favourite of the trip, good variety of everything. Me and a friend did the Soria climb at a reasonable effort and caught Pete Kennaugh and Mark Christian cruising up it at around the 2k mark, only to look behind about 3k later to witness Pete putting in a proper effort and passing us like we were stationary. Was pretty impressive to see how fast a pro climbs while you're on the same road!

I had a day off and missed the time we did Santa Lucia but it'll definitely add a bit of variety that I missed. Also doing that on the Nieves day is probably better than coming straight back down the GC60.

Good cheap cafe in San Bartolome, which you pretty much ride through on every outing, they do great cakes!
  • The photos look great!

I hope the weather is as good next week. What was it like descending for nearly 2hr from 2000m? Chilly?

The guy we were with has even better photos on his facebook, amazing scenery and the valley of tears is surreal. You'll love it. When do you go out and hows the forecast looking?

If it's anything like what we had you'll not even need arm warmers. Although I carried a set of arm warmers and a club gilet
(which I think is a windstopped winter castelli item) everyday. I had read/heard it can be quite a varied weather in the hills but we had it pretty much boiling everywhere we went. The initial decent off Nieves was slightly chilly if you were in the shade of the trees and wet with sweat, but I managed the whole trip without using additional layers.
  • I picked the wrong day for Nieves. According to the garmin it was 23 degrees at the resort and 5 degrees at the top and I couldn't see anything for the mist and fog. Thankfully I had come prepared with a light jacket although the decent was seriously cold
  • I'm back and I had a pretty decent time in GC, although the weather wasn't as nice as I'd have liked! There was a strong easterly wind every day gusting to 25+mph and it was quite overcast a lot of the time which meant it didn't feel like 20C. On day one it was actually chucking it down but I still managed a short ride.

In the end I rode 587km with a tad over 13km of climbing. Not too shabby!

Valley of the tears was pretty damn tough, although I feel a large part of that is due to the poor road surface on the 25% bits. The Serenity route was probably my fave day, the climb was lovely but the return leg along the coastal road into a headwind was a bit of a grind. The 45km climb from Maspolomas to Pico de las Nieves was just long and it was too cloudy to see anything at the top.:x I also nearly froze to death descending as it must've been like 5C at the top and I only had a wind jacket and long finger gloves to protect me!

Road quality was pretty variable I'd say. Some nice tarmac and some cracked, potholed pieces of ****. Descending was fun but a lot of drivers were trying to kill me by cutting corners as they went up through the switchbacks. :?
