Had Garmins previously, and put the tcx file into the 'newfiles' folder, and its there when I click onto courses folder.
I do the same with the 520 and it is no where to be seen, which is quite odd.

The original basemap has been replaced with a small map of the area i need which works fine.
but can't get courses on there no matter what I do, have reset to factory settings on the device, and software is up to date.

Any suggestions?

A few basics to get a course loaded.
    Computer with Garmin Connect installed
    Computer with Garmin Express installed.
You are correct any new course or workout will go into the Garmin new files folder and then copied into its correct location after a restart of the 520.
Creating a course in Connect and then 'sending ' to device will be 100%.
    However
Trying to use someone else's gpx or tcx file can be a problem.
The main thing is that the Garmin wants to convert everything into its fit file format, I mean everything .
  • Drop the file into "new files"
Disconnect the unit from the computer
    Turn off the unit
    Turn the unit back on
new fife should be in courses.
  • If i drop it in, into the "newfiles" folder it doesn't appear.

If I do it form garmin connect, it appears in the courses folder when I turn the Garmin back on, but then states the file is invalid.

is it compatible with the garmin, i.e. GPX or TCX?
  • Did you post your question on the Garmin Forum? I took a quick look and did not see anyone else with this problem.

What are you using to create the courses ?

    - I always use Strava to create a course
    - Save it to my laptop, in my documents
    - Connect the Garmin 520 to the laptop using the USB lead
    - open the finder application (or explorer)
    - Copy the file I made
    - open the Garmin. Then open the "new files" folder for the Garmin
    - paste the file
    - Safely disconnect the Garmin 520
    - turn off and back on again
    - I think you then go to Menu -> Training -> Courses

It worth noting you can get much better maps on the 520 for free.
