"Rumbling" Chain?

Noticed on my bike this weekend that the drivetrain isn't completely silent as it should be. Having had a good look at it yesterday, everything is appropriately tight (chain rings & bolts, jockey wheels, etc.) everything is aligned/indexed as it should be, the chain isn't catching on the front mech, but as I'm pedalling, there's a constant slight "rumbling" noise from the chain. It's not intermittent (i.e. comes and goes with the pedal stroke or chain position) and it's in all gears. Shifting is fine.

Having excluded everything that I can think of, I'm wondering if this could be the chain itself. Bike is full Ultegra 6800 but the chain is an FSA. My Tiagra equipped winter bike with a Shimano chain is completely silent running. Anyone else noticed something similar with FSA chains or is there anything I may be missing here?

Thanks.

Nah. Had a full degrease and re-lube (even though I'm pretty anal about chain maintenance anyway) and still did it.

Have you run the chain over the guide on the jockey wheels by mistake ?

Is it in all gears or just in big/big ish gears?

  • I had something similar until I readjusted the B-tension screw, which seems to have sorted it. Might be worth a try?

    Thanks.

Not sure the fundamental laws of physics are compatable with the drivetrain being completely silent - not in our 78% Nitrogen 21% Oxygen and 1% sundry other gases atmosphere anyway. Have you tried cycling in deep space? ;)
