Evening

Im pretty sure the above bike will be my next road bike. Standard spec it weighs 8.55kg. What the best and cheaper options to get it under 8kg???

Regards

  • Buy the Race Disc 2016 £1799 7.95kg Or The SLT 7.7kg

Normally pound for pound it will be cheaper buying the lighter bike from the start.
  • You can save 120g from the tyres by going for GP4000iiS. And probably about 300+g from the wheels.

The race is currently £500 more than the 105 at CRC. The wheels and tyres on the Ultegra are better. They account for much of the saving. If you bought the 105 you'd spend £500 making it the same weight and would only have 105 (that said the only real 105 parts are the mechs).

The lighter bike is likely to be a tiny tiny bit faster up a hill and make you feel a tiny bit fresher.

As said, wheels and tires .... its the only place that you will feel a difference when you are looking at dropping a mere 1kg.

I noticed no difference getting a carbon saddle and seatpost and handlebars and lighter groupset ... but swapping the old unknown wheels out for a pair of Roval paves and conti GPII it transformed the bike ... noticeably quicker climbing, a surge in acceleration whilst a speed and a lot quicker sprinting off the lights

yet the weight difference between the static items and the rotating ones were the same
  • Thanks for the replies, it's must appreciated. Unfortunately I can't stretch to the race version at this time. I'm just thinking for the future. You read in most posts about changing wheels so this will something I will bear in mind.

    Thanks again
  • That doesn't have to cost the earth. The Cosine Disc at Wiggle will save you a lot of weight. Chuck in some Schwalbe One tyres and you're looking at a shade over £200.

I have recently gone from 17 stone to 15 stone.

Makes a massive difference up hills, far more than stripping a few ounces off a bike.

    And cost nowt

By all means reduce the weight of your bike, but it will be expensive and less effective than dropping weight off your body

Reducing rotational weight by fitting 1500g wheels if your existing wheels are around 2000g is noticeable, but apart from that it's the law of diminishing returns.
