What to do with old Road bike?

Genuinely interested to see what people's thoughts are on this.

For next season I will be receiving a new giant road bike which will mean my current road bike is now redundant.

My thoughts are that the road bike is 4 years old, groupset 5 years old and has signs of weart so the bike is not really worth selling but it is running super record and weighs 6.5kg

I already have a fully dedicated training bike with full mudguards and everything else.

The Giant should be a reasonable upgrade compared to the Chinese carbon that I currently ride so there is no reason to ride my current bike for training.

What would you guys do with it?

I know many people like to try and squeeze every last penny out of their old tat by listing on eBay, but I give everything I no longer use to charity.

I'm sure someone somewhere would really appreciate that bike, or at least the charity shop could potentially sell it.

Not sure if serious. Sell it. Or keep it for next season in case you lose the sponsor deal.
  • It's a strange one because for me the bike isn't worth enough to sell but it's also too good to give away. Functionally it works but it now needs new bb bearings, new brake pads, new wheels, new chain, new casette.
  • I'd give it to me so I can learn how to fix up a bike... but that's just me :D

Seriously, depending on location, I'd love a project to learn on if you consider selling.
  • Give it to charity
  • Make it a dedicated turbo bike. That's what I am going to do with my old bike, so I don't need to swap it on and off all the time.

Stick it up on the classifieds and/or eBay and see if you get any bites. The SR groupset should help sell it.

Dismantling it and selling the cleaned and polished components separately on ebay will give you a pretty decent return.
FFS! Harden up and grow a pair :D
  • Dump it in the local channel

Chain it up some where and leave it there. If you leave is somewhere you pass by you can see how long it takes for bits to be stollen from it
  • Do it up a little bit and give it to a relative who is thinking about cycling or has expressed an interest and is not sure about shelling out to get started.

How can anything ever be "too good" to give away?

    You aren't going to use it, so your options are;

    1) sell it, if you are desperate for the few quid you say it's only worth'
    2) give it away
    3) keep it just in case??

    Why create a thread?!

It weighs only 6.5kg? Must be quite some old bike. I'd like to know what the frame and wheels are for it to weigh that.

If it weighs 6.5kg and has Super Record someone will buy it. Even if it needs new consumables.
  • Donate it to your club for youth development.

Could you donate it to a local school/college for an engineering project?
  • Why not keep it, you have winter bike with mudguards etc, but it would be useful for training on wet days in the summer.

Four year old bike, 6.5kg and Super Record! You could still sell that for a fair whack. Post up some pics.

if you've got the patience, I reckon breaking it and selling as parts will make the most. I know it against forum rules to presume values on bikes in order to sell them, but if it were me, that's what I'd do.

    Seems likely doesn't it?

If it is, I'll take it off your hands and I'll make sure it's properly recycled :D

    Looks about my size too...
