plotaroute routes crash my Garmin 810?

I recently stumbled across plotaroute which seems like a really flexible route planning site - much easier to edit routes than on e.g. Strava or Garmin websites.
However, on recent rides, although it navigates fine using routes plotted on plotaroute, and will pause/stop correctly at the end of my ride when I press the pause/stop button, when I press save,my Garmin 810 (running the latest firmware accordign to Garmin Express) and loses the ride (although I can find it in the activities section as a slightly corrupt ride, and can upload it to Strava manually as an .fit file, Garmin Connect won't acknowledge the ride, and I can't look at it again on the Garmin). Its only a limited problem, as I can manually upload, but I wondered if anybody else had encountered this, or even better, if they've worked out why and how to stop it?

Use Ride with GPS, it's a lot easier than all of them and I've never had a problem downloading routes to either my old 810 or new 820.I ride a bike. Doesn't make me green or a tree hugger. I drive a car too.0

If you seek simplicity when planning bike routes, my personal favorite is https://bikeroll.net
I used its GPX feature only once, it worked perfect on Garmin 520.0 -

That bikeroll site looks a bit basic for me, but thanks for the tip, bboti.0 -
I am trying to figure out why there is the need to use a third party application with the Edge 810?
I have the Edge 510 and have been toying with the 820 but having used RidgewithGPS quite a bit recently I really cannot see the point of the 820 especially with the screen size being smaller then its predecessor. I am aware of the additional features.
My understanding is that with the 800 series, mapping should be a lot better especially so if the route was planned using Garmin Connect which understandably no one can stand.0 -

To answer part of your question; The 810 has been plagued with problems ever since the 520 was released on the same platform. The changes Garmin made to accommodate the 520 and (IMO) waste of space Strava segments, farked the 810 up. LiveTrack has never worked properly since for me and if Bluetooth was on while following a course, the device could freeze requiring me to attempt switching off and on again mid ride. I started using Cyclemeter instead of LiveTrack so I didn't need bluetooth activated on the 810, but then the 820 came out.
Yes, the 810 is bigger for those who are long sighted, me included. But the 820 gets around the problems of the 810 with the added bonus of Connect IQ to use apps as the screen pages for things like power etc making the screen easier to read at a glance. Mapping isn't a problem for me. If I'm following a course, I have turn by turn activated giving me an audible warning in advance. LiveTrack works again (until Garmin mess about with the firmware again) keeping my other half happy and riders I'm meeting up with who can see when they need to set off.
Garmin Connect is woeful. As a route planning program it is way behind others such as Ride with GPS and indeed Strava. As an analysis tool, it isn't bad, but then Strava can do virtually the same and if you really want serious analysis post ride, programs like Golden Cheetah, Trainer Road etc can do a better job.I ride a bike.
