  • Ouch, bit close, but I believe it's traditional to point out that the cyclist doesn't pay road tax, so deserved it. I'm sure that tradition has been observed on twitter also.
  • Oooh, that's not clever.

close enough to get a tow for a bit it seems. Too close but at least the response (ignoring whatever may have happened privately) seemed to be relatively quick and of the right note though.

Fun to note the gentleman in question created a twitter account for this sole purpose.

    Good response from Sky there.

Given the amount of abuse people get on twitter I don't blame him. The tweets have already gone through the standard "you shouldn't be on the road, you don't pay tax" type trolling.

As above, some alarmingly-dense trolls getting involved on that page...
  • Meh, could have got a bus through that gap.

  • Not great driving is it - hopefully that was an untypical misjudgement on his part rather than indicative of his attitude to the job.

As a professional driver he should not have taken the chance.

Would you want him driving a bus load of school kids like that?

  • Maybe, they're bloody annoying listening to music out of their phones.

Not that I use public transport of course but did once after an op so couldn't drive and it happened to coincide with end of school.

  • I see that the video is now linked from the BBC Sport homepage. I'm glad this has been highlighted as it's a Team Sky bus, but I can't say that I'm really shocked as cars, vans and buses often pass me far too close rather than waiting for the vehicle to pass on the other side of the road.

The fact that Team Sky follow him on Twitter would suggest to me that they DM'd him and squared him away with a jersey or something. Not that that excuses that but if they did I am sure it was appreciated.

Genuine question - am I missing something?

I have seen this video several times, and I have to say I don't really see anything different to the hundreds of cars who pass exactly like that on every ride I do, every day.

I guess the bus could give more space, but so could every vehicle.

Is he not putting it on a little bit , perhaps because he saw it was a Sky bus?
  • Yes. I've been passed closer and Didnt feel the need to take to the Internet to vent.

Also, he was driving a left hand drive coach which would have given him a better view of the cyclist and a worse view of the lorry coming around the corner... he did pass a bit quick for me though.

True, doesn't make it right though

Disgraceful piece of driving from a professional driver. Had the tanker driver travelling in the opposite direction not managed to stop it time this could have turned into a major incident of epic proportions

Pause it when you can just read Rapha and ford. It's pretty bloody close.

Then let it play, and if you look closely, you might spot the point.

I've compared it to a clip I have of a car passing me ridiculously close. The coach was closer - so it really was close.

Sky obviously agree as they've said it's not acceptable.
If any of you are having passes closer than that - complain to the company. You could save someone's life. Maybe even your own?

No my intention wasn't to condone it - it's dangerous - I disagree with the few who are saying it's not that close it may not be an inch from the camera but unless the camera is mounted on his right shoulder it probably is inches from the cyclist.

Very good, but in all seriousness the level of driving around a cyclist is frightening, and Sky should know better.

Sky I assume do know better, however the driver in question either didnt, or didnt act as instructed or with a sensible mind never mind a safe head

Pretty sure this was an emergency situation caused by the tanker appearing whilst the coach was in an overtaking manoeuvre.
Should the coach driver have attempted to overtake in that spot, we don't know.

These roads are bloody dangerous and I'm sure it wasn't intentional, hopefully the driver has been made aware of the situation, learnt his lesson and is now driving with more awareness for unexpected hazards.

Yes, no, yes, yes, yes, yes.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.

But a cyclist is not an unexpected hazard, is it?

Problem is, oncoming traffic isn't exactly an unpredictable situation, you're on a road and you're going into the opposing lane, you have to expect other traffic to be coming around the corner, and even it inevitably does, do you then just turn into the cyclist you're busy overtaking? Overtaking cleanly may have meant they waited behind the cyclist but we can't have motorists waiting can we.
