Having thought about it for a while, I am wondering about going for different tires front to back on my CX bike (its a well accepted XC racing trick). Clearances at the fork are way better than at the back so I reckon i could do maybe 38F & 35R or maybe 40F & 38R.

Anyone got any experience of this? I see the benefits as more squash and grip at front for no disadvantage at rear. Tubeless both ends BTW.

I haven't tried this, mostly because of the rules limiting maximum tyre width to 33mm at National level races, and because my opponents are all on 33mm tyres. I often use different treads front and rear though, and almost always have the front tyre around 10% softer.
