Electronic Chip in Mechanical Shifter?

My mechanical Ultegra 5700 front shifter seized and so I started to strip it down to see if I could identify the problem. On removing the plastic cap on the shifter body I found what appears to be an electronic chip.

I have no idea why there would be an electronic chip in a mechanical shifter. Any thoughts?

Is it one of those that could be used with the Flight deck computor.
  • I guess it could be that, although I can't see anywhere that you could plug the computer into the shifter.

My older 5600 shifters have the tiny little rubber blanking plugs on the inside faces of the hoods. Always understood that was where a Flightdeck would be plumbed in. And somewhere inside there's what looks like a contact for something electrical...
