Hi all, as titled, what forks can you guys recommend for a budget of £120-150? In the market for a new bike but thinking of a self build. I've been looking at a Kona Kikapu Deluxe frame and I'm wondering what forks to use. It comes with a Fox Float rear. I have been looking at Suntour, Fox Float and Rock Shox and noticed that Suntour do a few 'budget' forks which I would like to avoid if possible, the bike will be used for commuting and light/medium XC (S. Wales area). Any info much appreciated!! Cheers.

Depends on the travel, type of steerer tube, plus the axle standard.

Suntour do some forks worth avoiding and some worth buying (Epicon/Epixon and Axiom are good forks, not just good value but stand comparison with RS and Fox products).

If so 100mm (you could fit upto 120mm) and plain steerer, an Epicon would be a good option.
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.

    @the rookie...
Cheers, already seen link, also looked at Epicon with good reviews, found a set for £130, 100mm travel should be fine as I won't be doing anything that extreme...

Good forks, many people rate them as an equal of the RS Reba.

  • Here goes, all components are from €b@y, one or two things might need swapping due to fitment/size etc.. but like the look of these items. A few questions are -
    1)quality of components
    2)any improvements
3)after looking on Google, I'm guessing the frame is 2007. A bit old but good condition
4)total price will be around the £650 mark, is this worth the build?
5)wheels - am I stuck with 26" or will 27.5" fit in this frame?
    Cheers for any/all input!!

    The Kikapu won't take a 34.9 seatpost, more likely it's a 27.2 or 31.6.

    Fork and headset look fine

Not sure about the quality of the bars.

Probably 27.2. My later Kona Four Deluxe is.
Make sure the cranks come with the BB - not in any of the pictures, and a new boxed crank is only about £55.
Don't waste money on a CB seatpost (especially one that won't fit). Have a look on www.carboncycles.cc
About £20 for a top quality alloy post. And other stuff.

That's a huge frame as well - hope you are a giant.

  • Cheers for help, much appreciated! Just had a think about it and realized I've read it wrong... Front mech is 34.9 clamp - outside the frame! Seat post goes INSIDE... doh!!
I'm 6ft so should fit fine..
Cooldad, can you point me in the direction of a full crank set? Cheers!

Try Chain Reaction as a starter. Or Merlin for a full groupset.

22 inch is still big even if you are 6 feet.
