Title says it all! Winter bike needed, preferably under C2W limit with disc brakes and provision for 'guards

CX considered but off road ability not essential - I've got an MTB

It's just a hill. Get over it.

Hydraulic 105 setup, the shifters don't look as awkward in real life.

If you take the right sizes, Tredz have the Cannondale Synapse Disc Adventure 2016 bike for £900. This has Sram Rival HRD hydraulic disc brakes and seems to come with mudguards. Obviously Tree Frog/Primer Grey would not be everyone's choice of colour scheme.

How about Boardman cx team from Halfords.Down to £799.
Has the new SRAM 1* 11 speed ,could be ideal for commute.

  • Picked up a Cannondale Synapse Alu Disc Adventure on c2w for winter duties today. Not many bikes out there with hydro discs under a grand and the colour combo isn't garish in real life. Full guards are alloy and pre-fitted. Took it out tonight and it's a comfy and stable bike. Needs mudguard flaps. I'll be changing the saddle, but YMMV. Pleased with it so far.

I was going to say the Whyte, but then saw the Pinnacle linked above and think I would take a serious look at that.

I have the previous years model - that is a steal at £899!
All I will say, is that having now had experience of both SRAM and Shimano hydraulic road brakes, the Shimano offerings are easier to adjust, and less finicky in calliper alignment.
Having said that, for £899, that is a whole lot of bike for the money, especially with the classy aluminium built in guards - if it's in your size, that would be an end to the search for me.
Wheels are silver and heavy, but if you are bothered, flog them on and get a set of Pro Lite Revo's - which is what I did, for an upgrade cost of about £100 including tyres.
    Felt F70 05 (Turbo)
Marin Palisades Trail 91 and 06
    Scott CR1 SL 12
    Cannondale Synapse Adventure 15 & 16 Di2
    Scott Foil 18
  • I got the Pinnacle Dolomite 5 using my C2W voucher in April this year as my new commuter and winter bike as I was fed up with crudguards and raceblades falling to bits and giving crap spray protection.

Fitted a set of SKS chromoplastics. Really neat finish and they are amazing compared to clip ons. The bike is still mint although it's only seen summer weather thus far.

It's perfect for what I needed and really good value. I've fitted a rack now for my commute. Hydraulic discs are lovely and work so well in the rain.

I changed the tyres to 28mm GP 4 Seasons and clearance is fine with mudguards. Run them at about 75psi and it's really comfortable.

Longest ride I've done is only about 30 miles as I use my good bike for longer rides through the summer and juat commute on the Pinnacle but come the winter this will be my main bike.

I'm a big fan of Genesis, why not look at the Vapour 10? or the Croix de Fer?

If you're going down the Genesis route, the Edinburgh Bike Co-op have some really good deals right now. For example, the Genesis Equilibrium Disc 10 '16 in a range of size for £799.

    Thanks all

So much choice! Am tempted by the Pinnacle 'cos it's now £850, there's a guy I often see out riding his and it's so-o-o-o-o-o pretty!:lol:

CRC have a Cube for £949 at the mo' which has a similar spec to the Pinnacle, but thru-axles (never used them) - am considering that as well - not sure of the benefit of thru-axles on a road bike, though?

PX London Road has more clearance. The Pinnacle can only fit 25C with mudguards, 28C without, PX can fit up to 40C. That may be important to you, I would like to fit 28C on my winter bike (Dolan Previsio frame) with guards, but it will only take 25C.

That Cannondale further up the thread....p*** poor mudguards, no flappage, very antisocial on the winter clubrun!

Good point, but could run 28c with Cruds, etc - want something that makes me get up and go, rather than more relaxed wheelbases etc of CX type bike. I've got a major multi-day ride planned for next year, so need to get in miles. And want discs 'cos there are lots of hills round here and I'm sick of sh177ing myself as I approach junctions in the wet...

  • As i said above I've got the 2016 Pinnacle Dolomite 5 and it takes 28mm Conti GP4S with SKS chromoplastics fitted and clearance is fine. I was also looking at the Arkose which is probably closer to the PX London Rd as an 'adventure' type bike but when it came down to it I knew I simply wouldn't need to take it off road so went for the Dolomite. I just wanted a quick comfortable commuter / crap weather road bike and it fits the bill nicely.
