This is good thinking but there are times where I really need that 'get out of trouble' gear and I'm unsure if the 36/28 combo would provide that as well as the 34/28 combo. Every little helps?

I'm in the same boat. 36/28 doesn't give me that bail out if I am breathing out of my arse. The 34/28 would be easier but not sure by how much in real terms out on the road and I would be sacrificing the veratility of the 36 over rolling terrain.

If only there was an 11spd 12-30 cassette. A it stands I'll probably go for the 11-32 after winter.

I still want one more gear than the 36/28 offers but don't necessarily want to go all the way to a 32.
I wanted to go up to a 32 but couldn't. The lowest gear on my carbon bike was 34/28 with a 10 speed Ultegra 11-28 cassette. I'd have gladly moved to 32 at the back but I could only get a 12-30 10 speed Ultegra cassette, meaning my lowest gear is 34/30 - still an improvement on 34/28 but not a huge amount.

SRAM do a 11 speed 11-30T cassette, XG-1190, if you have deep pockets.

So get a 105 c5800 or SRAM Force cassette.
I ride a bike. Doesn't make me green or a tree hugger. I drive a car too.

I'm not that desperate as presumably it would mean having to change other components which are all Shimano Ultegra?

Nope. Any Shimano or SRAM cassette is compatible. Years ago SRAM sponsored riders were using Apex wifi rear derailleurs on some serious mountain stages to give them access to a massive Apex 34 tooth rear cassette.

    yep SRAM are compatible 100%

since this was written, I now use 11-30 cassettes, so I can have a spinnier gear with a 52/36 than a 50/34 and 11/28.

best bang for buck are 105 cassettes to be honest. they tend to last slightly longer than ultegra. I do miss the 16 tooth though.

Top thread archaeology! Hopefully the OP has decided on a chainset by now...

Malcolm at the https://thecycleclinic.co.uk/collections/cassette can do you a custom 11 speed Miche cassette, I recently got a 13-30 from him.

  • I went from 52/36 to 46/36 on my Venge and get on well with it , theres much less of a step between front rings so the change is instant and as I,m in my mid fifties and definitely getting slower now I can stay on the 46 ring for longer periods than I could on a 52 , top end is down to about 45 mph on the rare occasion that it happens now.
