Hi,

Just wondering what the main differences / advantages and disadvantages are before buying some new pairs of shorts?
Thanks

Bibs prevent the shorts 'riding' down your back, or creating a massive gap between the bottom of your jersey and top of your shorts. So they keep you warmer, there's less of a breeze and less builder's bum.

But if you're going on relatively short rides and don't want to be lycrad up, you might prefer normal shorts.

Also bib shorts will have padding. If by normal shorts you mean non-cycling shorts, then they won't have padding. But you can buy padded 'normal' shorts. Padding is pretty essential if you're riding even medium distances.

Just get bib shorts. They are better.

Look at the pros - they are riding long hours every day. How many of them do you see in non-bib shorts?

I have a pair of both.
The Bib ones are far more comfy and keep you slightly warmer too

Non-bib shorts are tighter round the waist to keep them up.
    They are therefore less comfortable.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.

  • I have both and usually prefer bibs.

Keep in mind: on longer rides, bathroom breaks with bibs are a nightmare. Have fun trying to take off the jersey and undo the bibs in a portapotty.

With bibs they stay up in a comfortable position and you just ride. Non bibs are just irritating and less comfortable.
  • Thanks all, I've ordered a pair of bib shorts.

Just remember to pull them on like normal shorts then put on the bibs.
Do not pull them on by the bibs. Lots of newbies regret that expensive move.
