  • I've got the on-one smorgasbord dual compound on the back of Mega - been really good so far in all conditions.

depends on the conditions you are riding it. current conditions round my local area demand aggressive tyre front and rear (conti baron 2.4), when its dry I run a spesh slaughter out back with a HR2 or XR4 on the front. mk's are not great in anything muddy IMO but ok on the back assuming you are running BC compound but they are a bit thin. I'd get a baron 2.4 for the front and put the MK from the front on the back and see how you get on with that. so long as its not pure mud you should be fine.

Cheers looked at the baron and it looks over the top for local rides so may just get one for when I take my bike to peak district. I've had to swap out the rear mountain king as it just wont sit straight on the mavic wheels I'm using think the tyre bead has had it. Found an x-king 2.2 in my shed and fitted this for time being. I'm not that impressed with continental tyres the bead is too tight and makes a job to get on/off my wheels.

Are hans dampf any good as I fancy a change and could run hans dampf front with nobby nic rear, used nobby nic before evo compound so know these are good.

I've looked at Maxxis highroller 2 combo with ardent or advantage rear.

what are the sidewalls like and are they easy to fit, my current tyres are pain in the backside to put on/off. As for the price I think I'd just buy 2 to try them out.

if its muddy then you want a tyre that grips in the mud.

That would be a job for a mud tire and those typically get ruined anywhere where it isn't muddy. Unless you're specifically riding plain muddy terrain, you just want to pick something the will clear the mud, not necessarily have decent grip on it.

I'm not taking about riding in pure mud and I've never used a mud tyre ever but if you are riding in conditions that cover your bike and you in mud then you want a tyre that will grip in those conditions.

if soft conditions only make up a tiny part of your trails then don't go with such an aggressive tyre

The side walls seem pretty robust.
They were a bit of a pain to fit - but I've got quite wide/deep carbon rims.
But nothing that a bit of tyre-lever agro couldn't sort.

True that. Just misunderstood you :)

Been looking at more tyres, I've used specialized tyres years ago and wonder any one running a set of purgatory tyres?

These look a good option for an all rounder trail tyre that I'm after.

butcher looks too aggressive for my uses tread pattern more like a maxxis minion.

I'm now thinking purgatory front and ground control rear for a grippy but faster rolling rear.

Grid and control versions I've noticed for sidewall thickness any difference between them?

Purgatory front and Ground control rear is a good combination. I ran them for a few years on my Stumpy and they were great.
Another good tyre for the rear is The Captain. It's a bit less draggy than a Ground Control but not as good in mud.

Grid is a tougher side wall. Go for that if you intend running tubeless.
