No first gear?

I've got a Calibre Crag Mountain Bike.
It's awesome, I love riding it.
BUT... I can't get into first gear.
On the left I have 1, 2 and 3.
When I put into 1, the indicator goes past the 1 and the pedals don't seem to respond.
The bike is about 6-7 weeks old.
The problem has always been like this.
Does this sound like a fault?

I'd take it back if I were you , and ask them to check it and find out what the problem is

Are you trying to change gear without pedalling?
Otherwise read Parktools and check the indexing.I don't do smileys.
