Trip coming up next week, it's going to involve the tour de mon so my bikes going too. Along with the kids and dog.

So, dog in boot, kids plus their associated baggage, wife. The usual.

I have a saris bones 2 that I use locally but using the hatchback to get the dog in and out will be a pain.

Could dismantle the bike and stick it in the Thule roof bag/box thing we've got. Bags will go in the boot/back of the car.

Or I could splash out and get one of: Thule 561; Thule 598; or Atera giro speed.

So forum wisdom time - what would you do?

Not that much of a pain to lift the rear with the bike on...

I borrowed a couple of these:

Took two bikes to the Dordogne from the Edinburgh area. No problems at all. Easy to fit and easy to get bikes on and off. If you have the roof bars and space in the rear for a front wheel this may be your cheapest alternative for a single bike. You can also get a wheel carrier for the roof.

We did just that a few years ago; East Anglia to South Wales. Focus estate. Me, wife, 2 kids, dog in the boot with some luggage, 3 bikes on rack on back of car, big suitcase wrapped and strapped to roof bars. Easier to get the dog in and out by flattening the rear seat back.

One bike on a saris rack - just open it as normal and hold it up whilst the dogs get in/out. You can open the boot with 3 bikes on there without too much trouble.

Have you got 2 cars. Years ago when we used to go camping as a family, the wife, daughter and camping in one car. Me and the bikes in other worked well.

If it was them suggested that, I'd start to be concerned.

Thanks all! I'm going to stick with the saris rack and not bother with roof bars at all. Good shout on getting the dog in and out via the back seat. Unfortunately I'm the only driver in the family so a gentle 240 mile warm up would be a bit tricky!

    Would recommend.

I like the idea and portability but the price!

They would be great for taking your bike abroad and using a hire car.

The one downside is no security though
