Garmin 1000 Navigation - Maps choice

I have a Garmin 1000, but I'm finding turn by turn navigation to be pretty hit and miss at best.

I have friends using iPhones and Mios that seem to be far more accurate and prompting turns which the Garmin misses.

I used to have the 800 with open street maps installed which seemed to be far more effective.

Has anyone found the same issues, I'm wondering if I may be better of removing the default base maps that came with the unit and replacing them with OSM?

Anything else I'm missing?

I'm in the UK and I use the Connect web site to plot my routs and I use the maps which come with my 1000.

I don't experience any issues with navigation, nor turn by turn navigation.

Are you in the UK? If not, where are you? I ask as this might make a difference.

+1 to planning the route on the Garmin site then uploading to the device. Others have come unstuck doing the planning on eg Google Maps which then doesn't agree with the Garmin base map.

    Yes, I'm in the UK.

I usually plot routes on Strava route planner and then export the gpx.

Sounds like the Strava GPX isn't working as accurately with it as using Garmin Connect does.

Why not plan one in Connect and see how that goes?

  • I use strava for planning and download to a garmin 1000 although I use the tcx files. Turn by turn navigation is nothing to do with the route planning but a function of the unit itself in conjunction with the maps. My garmin has OSM maps as standard and works fine most of the time with turn by turn - occasionally it misses a turn where the road may turn right but I'm turning off but it's actually straight on. I used this website to set up my unit - http://www.forgot.co.uk/garmin-edge-nav ... edge-1000/

    Yeah, that's what I'm finding a lot.

And also arriving at crossroads and it offering no instruction, which seems to mean to go straight over.

I'll give the Gamin connect maps a try to see if that's any better

Never had any issues with mines, I had problems with the 800 though which is one of the reasons I changed.
