Hi, just fitted new Deda Zero100 stem as my old one (stock one on my Allez) had cracked. Now when i put the spacers back on and go to tighten the headset bolt, it doesn't go all the way down to secure it all in place - there is some movement in all the spacers and the fork is able to move a little up and down. How is this rectified? Another spacer to close the gap??

if the new stem isn't as deep as the old one, then yes it's possible you need to change spacer height to compensate

he = height of existing spacers

hs = difference in between old/new stem depth

hn = new height of required spacers = he + hs

  • great, thanks Sungod. i take it any alloy spacers are ok, maybe a pack to make sure i get the right one

    yes

btw the alternative is to cut a bit off the end of the steerer, but adjusting the spacers is easier

I had the same problem when swapping bits between my Racelight Tk and CR1; one stem turned out to be a bit fatter than the other, meaning I couldn't properly preload the headset on the Scott. CBA adding spacers or cutting any more off the steerer so I just swapped them back...
