Tyres. How cracked is too cracked?
I just noticed my rear tyre has worn down and I can just about see the tube, so it's time to replace.
I have a used tyre that's been hanging in the shed for about a year that I've put on, but it is very cracked. I'm not convinced it looks too good and will probably try and replace it this evening but I'm wondering what peoples thoughts on it are, is it toast? It's like that along about 2/3 of the wheel.

Cheers, that's what I was thinking. I'll pop the other one back on and hope it makes it to the bike shop and back.0

I had some GP 4 Seasons went like that. Then the local council decided it was a good idea to surface dress all the roads for miles around, and the resulting abrasive chippings pretty soon saw off what was left of the tread. Great chunks of it started peeling off leaving me running on just the casing. Still impressively puncture-free though!
So I'd say you can probably ride it if needed, but keep an eye on it and don't expect it to last much longer0 -
Turbo-trainer tyre....FFS! Harden up and grow a pair0

Can't see anyone wanting that, tbh. Unless it's for an urban art project, or something...0

Conti tyres are really bad for cracking up like that I find. I don't think they're actually likely to completely fail as the carcass is still intact and the rubber is still bonded to it. It's very disconcerting though. I've switched to Michelin in the last few years and they don't seem to do this.0
