Hi all I'm new to mtb riding. I have just purchased a new giant talon 27.5 0. It's a great bike but the gearing is not good as I only ride the canal towpaths I seem to be on the last two gears on the rear. Or I spin way to fast. The front end is a 38/24. So my question is would you change the front ring to a 40 tooth and would it make much difference. I e give me a few more gears on rear end

The front mech will only really cope with a 14t step, so if you go to a 40t you really need to go to a 26 or 28t granny, and you'll have to reset the mech height (check it can move up a few mm), otherwise yes it will work fine.

That said I suspect you need to learn to spin at a higher cadence, I can easily top 25mph on the level using a 32T chainwheel and I doubt you are going that speed on a canal towpath.
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.

Cheers for your reply. Went out today on canal it was not as bad as I thought it would be. I'm a roadie so used to spinning with speed I think I've got to learn how to ride mtn bikes. But it was good fun
