Quick Shimano rear mech question
Wife has requested an option of a slightly larger range cassette for the hillier rides.
Currently using 30-12(? it may be 11 - doesn't matter) with Shimano 5700 "standard" rear mech - I think they call it short cage ... it's not as long as my tiagra one on the Tricross with a triple front. She has 34-50 on the front.
She'd like to have a 32-xx - but I know the rear mech won't take it as the top jockey wheel is too high. Actually she didn't say 32-xx at all - just an easier gear - but swapping to a triple would be more expensive ...
Anyway - does a long cage mech have greater space at the top between itself and the cassette? I could just try by swapping out my one - but that means messing up 2 bikes for the sake of one easy question!

I don't think there's any general rule, the capacity of the mech with regard to cassettes is unrelated to cage length. That said some may have a greater capacity. I would check the specific mech's capacity on the makers website, I know with shimano you can in certain circumstances go up a bit. So on my 105 rear mech the capacity according to the big S is 28 but I have run a 30 without issues. The other way is to buy an adapter to increase the capacity like the wolf tooth.

I run a tiagra long cage on my hybrid, its designed to take a 34t with a double and a 32t with a triple .. I have an 11-32 10speed cassett with it and 50/34 up front0

Ah yes - forgot about those - that could be a good way to do it for the occaisional use. It would do exactly as needed - in moving the mech down away from the cassette - the overall differential capacity isn't critical if the rider remembers not to go to the extents of the cassette in the wrong ring up front.0 -
5701 medium cage allows for 32T, as well as having enough capacity to take a triple, but still happily works with a compact setup. I don't think there's an 11-32 cassette in 105 5700 but you can use any 10 speed Shimano cassette, not just 105.0

yup - my Tricross is similar - although only 9 speed - but wasn't sure if that was down to where the rear mech attaches to the hanger.0 -

not bothered about the 11 cog - I can always do a pick'n'mix with another cassette anyway.0 -

Your answer is a Shimano SLX HG10 11-32 cassette (or 11-34 if you think you can get away with it using a medium cage RD)

I fitted one to a flat bar bike I built for my grandson - it worked brilliantly with the Ultegra 10-speed flat bar shifters and a CX50 (46/36) chainset.0 -

If the shifters are 5700 then any Shimano 9-speed MTB RD will be compatible, and will definitely allow a cassette up to 34t and probably 36t if you want. I'm using that combination myself on one bike - a Deore XT M772 9-speed RD and Ultegra 6700 shifters with an 11-36 10-speed cassette. Shimano kept cable pull identical across road and MTB up to 9-speed MTB and 10-speed road, so a 9-speed MTB RD changes perfectly across a 10-speed cassette with 10-speed Shimano road shifters.
This RD, for example: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/au/en/shimano-deore-m591-9-speed-rear-mech/rp-prod40543.0 -
Ah - excellent - although the 5701 medium cage is cheaper - but won't take quite such a large cassette ... hmmm ...

This - I use the XT M771 MTB mech - but either one works perfectly with 10sp road shifters. You will need to add a few links in the chainFFS! Harden up and grow a pair0 -
If you go down the MTB route, you'll need a long cage one. The medium cage ones can cope with 35 teeth difference. You have a 16 difference in front, so this only allows 19 on the rear.so a 12-32 will be about your maximum. I'm running a long cage XT RD with an 11-36 cassette. the medium cage didn't work.0
