Loud Noise Only When Freewheeling at High Speed
Noticed this a couple of months ago, not been fast enough to bring it back since, but the problem is as follows.
When descending fast (40mph+ or so) and I stop pedalling, there is sometimes a horrendous loud grinding noise that starts. It is not an extension of the whirr of the freewheel. It doesn't affect speed and hasn't manifested itself in anything else other than a loud noise which can go on for minutes on a long descent.
The noise stops immediately if i start pedalling slowly (not affecting speed at all as would need to be at 120+ cadence to catch up with the gears).
I can't work out what it is or where it is coming from, hence why I'm posting. I've had a new rear derailleur installed about 6 weeks ago after a crash, problem existed before and after this point. New freehub about 6 months ago.
I'm on full 6800 Ultegra with Mavic Ksyrium Elite S wheels on my Canyon Ultimate.
any thoughts on what could be causing this?

This is the same issue I think: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TwREXRBjrdI

Google Mavic death squeal.
It will be the plastic bushing in the freehub that needs lubricating if you're lucky, or replacing if not. Which is annoying because Mavic don't sell it as a spare part and instead want you to buy a whole new freehub. Suitable alternatives can be found with a bit of internet trawling though.
Some think it's a daft design, others defend it.

Ok. Will get that cleaned and lubed tonight and see what happens. Only replaced in January, 3500 miles ago, these covered by warranty?0 -
That is pretty poor. Hopefully given the low mileage a clean and lube should sort it.
Was the replacement freehub fitted by a LBS / Mavic dealer? Why did it need replacing anyway?
I suppose you've nothing to lose by pursuing a warranty claim, but in that case it would be best if you hadn't taken it apart....
Unless it's your only rear wheel and they don't lend you one while it's away...0 -

Old one had done 12,000 miles and had started wobbling. I think some degreaser had got into the bearings at some point too.
Replaced by lbs. Was only about £20-£30 i think.0 -
Had a shocker when taking the locking nut off. Bit that sits in the frame fell off. Freehub looking sparkly new and lubed up but can't go anywhere til I get a new nut!0 -
None of this is tempting me to make my next wheel purchase a Mavic one!0
