Mavic front wheel play

There is a little bit of play in my front wheel when mounted on the bike. Mavic Ksyrium Elite wheel with QR on a Cannondale Synapse bike. When I take the wheel off to investigate there appears to be no discernible play in the axle, yet when remounted it is there again (slight, but noticeable). I have ordered a Mavic hub wrench so I can at least have a look and see what's what, but is there anything else I should be checking? The steering bearings appear to be OK (no play at all if I hold the front brake and rock the bike to and fro) and as far as I can tell* all spokes appear to be sound. The wheel spins freely and rolls OK.

* tinging the spokes and seeing what note they play
Cube Reaction GTC Pro 29 for the lumpy stuff
Cannondale Synapse alloy with 'guards for the winter roads
Fuji Altamira 2.7 for the summer roads
Trek 830 Mountain Track frame turned into a gravel bike - for anywhere & everywhere

I have a set of R-sys and it just seems to be a thing that the hub cap keeps loosening on its own...
My LBS said it's no problem as long as I tighten it up every now and then.

Nope, it's just the bearing preload, so once you get the tool, you are back on the road
