Will a FC-9000 dura ace 11 speed chainset work on a dura ace 7900 10 speed set up ?. im in the process of upgrading and I have a chance of a 9000 dura ace chainset and wondered if it would work till I can afford the rest

It will work fine. That being said though unless the chainrings are worn, there is no performance benefit in changing from the 7900 to a 9000 so why change? If you are set on moving to 11 speed eventually I'd perhaps stick with the 7900 chainset and start with the brakes - the 9000 brakes are noticeably better than the 7900s. Then swap mechs/shifters/chain/wheels and then chainset last of all once chainrings are worn.
FFS! Harden up and grow a pair :D
