Surly Krampus Ops Ultra Hub Bearings

Due to a problem with the stock BB bearings on my Krampus Ops I decided to have a look at the hub bearings (Surly Ultra Hubs) and see if they needed attention. I removed the screws, covers etc but cannot see how to remove the axle/bearings from the hub. I suspect that hitting the end of the axle with a mallet might work but I don't want to do any damage to the hubs and bearings. I appreciate if they are good then I won't need to remove them at this stage but I would like to know the method for when they do need replacing. Cheers.

    The axle is stepped and so you need to give the spindle a firm tap at either end to release the bearings.
    Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
