Hi all,

A long time out of the mountain bike scene and looking to get back involved in some light/recreational offroading in the hertfordshire area. I have a limit of £1000 and am looking for the best spec I can get possible, at Evans cycles I have narrowed it down to the following options:

Have you considered the Boardman Pro 29er? 120 mm Reba RLT forks, SRAM GX 1 x 11, SRAM Guide R brakes, good frame geo and currently £850.
    2006 Giant XTC
    2010 Giant Defy Advanced
    2016 Boardman Pro 29er
    2016 Pinnacle Lithium 4
    2017 Canondale Supersix Evo
  • Looks ok, spec isnt is good for chainset, rear and front mech and crankset is it. Also brakes arent as good are they. Scott has some shimano XT on it for example

Has the best fork which is hands down the most important bit....as for not having a good front mech on a 1x11....erm.......

Guide R are good, longevity not yet know though but then my mate has just had to swap out an XT calliper that failed at 13 months old.
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.
  • Ah looks liek Ive been too long out of the game, what happened to 27 gears, now just 11 and 1 cog at the front! Also not heard of pinnacle before.

So forks priority before gearset/brakes, frame.

Also confused as to which has the best hydraulic discs as the shimano website has everythign under a different name!

The reason I was thinking of Evans is that it is by far the cheapest and best range

    Pinnacle is Evans own brand.

Best value comes from volume, so Halfords, Decathlon and Go outdoors.

Shimano brakes are easy, bigger M number the better, Deore, SLX, XT.

Cheaper gearing may be a bit heavier and not feel as nice or last quite as long and can be replaced in stages), but physically it works just as well, the fork in the other hand is where money makes a difference to how a bike rides.

Have you considered the BTwin Rafal 720? A little cheaper than the ones you listed, but a great XC spec for the cash:

  • Thanks that clears up a lot I'll look over the suggestions. Out of the 5 I have listed what would people choose if they had to?

The Superfly, joint best fork but decent tyres that won't need changing straight away.

  • I really cant decide between these 3:

    Cannondale F-SI Alloy 2 2016 Mountain Bike
Scott Aspect 900 2016 Mountain Bike
Scott Scale 950 2016 Mountain Bike

Have you seen them in the flesh, tried for size? That may or may not rule some out. The main difference in the Aspect and Scale is that the latter has a lighter, more XC oriented build and frame - though the geometry is very similar.

If spending 1k though the Pinnacle is superb - the Rev RLT fork gets a better damper than the Rebas with dedicated high speed circuits, and a big step up from the crude Recon on the Cannonondale. The OnOne Parkwood is worth a look too:

More relaxed geometry than the others, shold that be what you want, which wioll add a little more stabilty in the rough stuff and downs.
  • Unfortunately have been to 3 evans stores and they havent had any of these in, I really want to see them in the flesh before committing
  • They should be able to order them in for a demo.
