Planet X Experiences - Buying a new bike!

Pair of innertubes, spare chain, tyre leaves, multi tool and chain tool (last 2 came in handy this weekend when I needed to convert the chain to single speed after my rear hanger snapped). No, I don't have a spare.
I guess it's all relative.
Innertubes, cables etc fair enough but shifters, wheels etc are expensive - I don't think it's fair to assume that everyone will have a spare wheel to lob on when the unforeseen happens. Even if you need the bike for an event the next day.0 -
To be fair, if you have a second bike at home - that's all you need as by definition you have all the spares you need since it's an entire other bike and will suffice until your primary bike can be fixed.0

I bought a new bike from them and well satisfied up to now. Good delivery lead time.
It's just getting rid of the cardboard box is a pain.0 -

Oh, I don't assume it - all I was doing was suggesting it is a good idea to have one. I use Campag Khamsins on the Ribble. If you need a pair in a hurry I think you can probably get them for about £90 to £100 on discount. I got a brand new pair, from a shop on Ebay for £60 delivered which really isn't much (costs that much to fill the car up). Unless you are short of space, there is a lot to be said for just buying this stuff when it is cheap. And with wheels, it isn't as though there is any chance that I won't use them at some point. The shifters I might not have had as spares but for the fact that Campag had discontinued 10sp Ultrashift so I picked up a cheap, second hand pair on here while I could.Faster than a tent.......0 -
Back onto Planet X.
My current experience has taught me not to expect quick service if/when they have a sale on.0 -
Ordered a helmet and base layer on the 20th, received an email saying it is being dispatched this evening at 10.30pm.
5 days to dispatch something in stock isn't great IMO, I ordered from Wiggle on the same day and received the order today!
Planet X prices may be cheap, but damn they are slow!
Don't order if you're in a rush!Obsessed is a word used by the lazy to describe the dedicated!0 -
Ribble are offering the Gran Fondo this weekend for £775 with Shimano 105. This seems like a pretty good deal, and on paper it seems to have a lot more going for it. I've looked at all the other bikes that people have mentioned on here too but I keep going back to the Planet X Pro Carbon. I just like the look of it!
So does anyone here have a Gran Fondo? Are they any good?0 -

Why not buy yourself a bike with a much better frame than either of these and for the same money :

Or buy the Gran fondo with the 6 year old frame or the Planet X with the 9 year old frame instead. Choice is yours.0 -

They arrived next day, however the bag containing the skewers and 10sp spacers had been opened. The spacers had been removed so I couldn't fit them to my bike. As I needed to use the bike straight away I had to get a lbs to provide the spacers. Planet X sent out some spacers after 5 days.
A bit of forward thinking saves a lot of problems. Ordering wheels that you appear to need the day after you order them seems a little optimistic.
How much more than three pounds was the discount you got off retail (or relative to other shops) by buying the wheels from PX?
Awesome post rate by the way!
As it happens I had damaged my wheels which is why I needed new ones in a hurry.
I saved a tenner by not using wiggle, which I wished at the time I hadn't bothered as wiggle are always faultless.
I'm not sure why ordering wheels with next day delivery is being optimistic if I plan to use them 48 hours later? Or should I have expected Planet X to have taken bits out of the box?
You are right, I don't post much, but as the thread asked for Planet X experiences I thought I'd share mine.
Awesome attitude to other forum users by the way.
I'm suggesting that your life might be a bit less stressed if you plan ahead - I would have thought that was a pretty helpful suggestion. I've bent two wheels on one pothole before but it didn't mean I needed to worry about postal deliveries before getting back on the bike. All I'm saying is that PX don't seem to have done you too badly.
1) They provided you with a bargain
2) It took them only one day to send it
3) They provided a replacement reasonably promptly but not ideally so.
On the down side, what they provided was flawed - which sometimes happens (even with Wiggle). But that's no reason for you to expect PX to cover your extra expenses. Look on it as a disorganisation tax. You got your wheels and you were still £7 up on the Wiggle deal.
Best way to deal with the damaged wheel problem is to have a spare pair in stock (along with all the other spares you might need). In the long run it is cheaper (because you probably get a better deal than buying in a hurry) and you don't have to get stressed about things not arriving on time - there's always something that can go wrong eg the delivery driver damaging them. Alternatively, don't have spares but do expect to potentially miss a ride. Alternatively, buy your replacement product at your LBS. Your LBS would have probably preferred to have supplied the wheels rather than just the spacers.
PS I can't know that you'd specified next day deliver unless you say so in the first place! Nor can I know that 'straight away' means after an additional 48 hours. Not that it changes anything.......
Oh dear, do you work for Planet X or something? is this how you accumulated your mighty post count by trolling other forum users in to submission?
1) £10 cheaper than wiggle...yes bargain.
2) correct, can't fault their original dispatch time...which wasn't the point of my post anyway?!
3) A week is not "reasonably promptly" as you like to call it.
If you look at the original dispatch time it shows what they can achieve, so there was absolutely no reason for it to take nearly a week to get a spacer out to me. That shows a lack of customer care.
For you to suggest that I should have had a spare set of £400 wheels just hanging up in the shed just in case is laughable.
At the end of the day, Planet X messed up, they took a part out of the box and they were SLOW to rectify it - all they had to do was put a spacer in an Jiffy bag. That would have taken minutes to do, but no it took nearly a week. It should not take that long, and if you think that is reasonable then good for you, but I like good prompt service.
I'm not sure why you are trying to educate me on the value of having spare items? I bought some wheels that were heavily discounted from RRP, had I bought them earlier to keep as a spare set, it's likely that I would have paid closer to the retail price, so your theory is all well and good, but wrong.
Disorganisation tax? Please don't try to patronise me, I learnt my lesson already, stick with someone like Wiggle.
I think you have made your point and I have made mine, I suggest you move on.
You're welcome.0 -

Fair point, although I think it is fair to say the Gran Fondo has been tweaked over the years. Internal cable routing etc.
As you mention Giant bikes, I've been looking at the Defy Advanced 3 with carbon frame. A few places are offering it at just over £900 which seems a pretty good deal!0 -

I have ridden/owned the Ribble and the Planet X and now own a 2016 Giant. No comparison really. Much better ride and for the same money!0
