£900 bike suggestions

edited July 2016 in Road buying advice
I bought a B'twin Triban 500SE at the beginning of May to dip my toe into road cycling but having already clocked 1000 miles on it I'm considering something better especially frame as I don't want to have to start replacing components on such a cheap one. I tend to do rides on my own of around 30-60 miles on a Sunday morning.

I'm looking at bikes around the £900 mark in the 2016 sale, I'm a bit torn between a lighter aluminium-I like the look of the Specialized Allez comp, the reviews say it has more aggressive geometry than the models lower down but the charts say they are the same. It has been suggested that I look at the Ribble Gran Fondo which is there bike of the week currently or I like the look of the Emitter R3 on Wiggle but am not sure whether the carbon is any good, especially as the Allez has a similar weight.

Advice or any other suggestions would be gratefully recieved.

For that sort of money look at the BMC range in Evans or the Specialized Tarmac you may also find a deal on a Cannondale Caad 10 disc if you look around

What about my suggestion of the Eastway Emitter R3? Looks like great spec, does anyone have anything good or bad to say about it?

If you've only done 1000 miles on the Triban in 3 months then it's barely run in. You shouldn't be worrying about having to replace anything just yet. Keep the chain lightly lubed and start checking it for wear in another 500 miles, and replace it when 0.75% stretched. Apart from that I'd just keep riding it till it does start to need some attention.

By then you'll have a better idea of the kind of bike you want the next one to be. Are you a fair weather cyclist or will you be riding it all year round and in all conditions? Do you want race or endurance geometry / fit? Room for wider rims / tyres? Disc brakes? Ability to fit proper mudguards?

Next September you should be able to pick up a bargain in the sales as retailers make room for 2018 models

Specialized, cannondales are common as muck.

One could quite easily reverse the names of the brands in that statement.

But, back on a serious note.

The Triban is good and should continue to serve you well. There are arguments that you need to spend a lot more to get a better bike. There is some truth to that but £1000 bikes etc are very good indeed if bought at the right time.

Lots of good suggestions on here. The Emitter R3 looks very good indeed and without any obvious weak links. Should be excellent.

I'd also throw in, given that it's reduced at the moment, the Giant Defy Disc 1.

I have the Btwin over in France which i use for 2 weeks out of the year on holiday. Here I have a Cannondale CAAD12 Ultegra with an Ultegra wheelset.
I am a fairly strong rider and like to push hard on rides. When riding the Btwin for those 2 weeks it does feel very sluggish!
There is nothing to fault regarding the shifting of the microshift 8 speed gearing and infact the drive train is just as smooth as 11speed Ultegra.
I suspect the sluggishness is down to the wheels and tyres to the point i dont feel safe sprinting on the Btwin. i would love to upgrade these but cant justify it for 2weeks out of the year.
If you i would spend your money on a good set of wheels and quality tyres. Although check the 8 speed compatability.
But if you are genuinely 'out of love' with your Btwin then you may as well get a new bike ☺
